Psst! Here’s a secret you may or may not know: eating a healthy diet isn’t enough to lose or maintain weight. Sorry, I hate to be the bearer of bad news, especially if you’ve finally made the decision to eat healthier, as part of your weight loss program. But, the sad news: healthy eating isn’t enough.
To kick-start your weight loss into high gear, you really need to make cardio your Best Fitness Friend (BFF)! And, I’m not referring to namby-pamby workouts of mind-numbing walks on the treadmill either. I’m talking high-intensity workouts that leave you gasping for air and drenched in sweat. Yeah, I know — it must be a better way, right? If you find it, please let me know.
Cardio workouts are highly effective for burning fat, which results in weight-loss. The more intense the workout, the better. High-intensity interval training (HIIT) workouts, which lasts 20 – 30 minutes, can give you fast results in a short amount of time.
With my own weight-maintenance program, I’ve come to the realization that I need to consistently include high-intensity, cardio workouts, if I want to tone and burn fat.
Right now, my go-to workout is cardio kickboxing. I love this workout because it gives me intervals of high-intensity cardio, along with toning. I do this workout at least three times a week, and then workout two extra days alternating between zumba and step/sculpt. If you really want a kick-ass workout, try the Jillian Michaels Cardio Kickbox workout (tough, but effective). This workout comes with a warning: you should do the workout only once a week. Having tried this workout several times, I’d agree — it’s grueling!
With cardio as your BFF, you are well on your way to having a more effective weight-loss program!
