Get the Skinny on Burgers!

Is the burger the “star”attraction at your cookout? Do you put a lot of effort into buying the best beef, the soft white buns and all the fixins. You and your guests may think that a barbecue wouldn’t be the same without a great American burger.

You may not know, but your average burger can also pack on a whole lot of calories. Sorry to be such a killjoy. I wouldn’t be true to myself if I didn’t tell you the truth. Yes, the burger(s) you’re planning to eat and serve, at a 4th of July barbecue will give you a lot more than taste.

A six-ounce beef burger served on a white bun, smothered with condiments and toppings could add up to a whopping 700 – 800 calories. That’s a lot of calories to consume from one burger.

If you’re hosting a cookout, you can help your guests to reduce their burger calorie consumption by serving healthier burgers, such as turkey, which has 80 percent less fat than beef, and is considered heart healthy.

Here are a few ideas for serving healthy burgers:

  • Grill turkey and veggie burgers, instead of beef
  • Replace white hamburger buns with whole wheat buns, or sandwich thins
  • Serve healthy toppings such as, sliced tomatoes, lettuce, grilled onions and peppers
  • Buy low-fat cheese slices
