The end of year is usually a time of reflection, and with the ending of 2012 just around the corner, I thought I’d take a moment to reflect on some of the healthy food trends of 2012.
This list is by no means exhaustive, but it lists some of the trends that made it to our tables and fridge:
- Healthy in a hurry – easily available and ready to eat health foods
- Chia Seeds Single-Serve Packs – On-the-go snack loaded with fiber and Omega-3, a heart-healthy fatty acid
- Eggland’s Hard-Cooked Peeled Eggs – Ready-to-eat and nutritious eggs that require no cooking, peeling, or clean-up
- Individually-wrapped Plums – Not your gradma’s prunes! This snack is moist and juicy, and can travel wherever you go
- Low-sugar – yummy to the tummy, yet low in sugar and healthy
- KIND Nuts & Spices Bars – All natural snack bars loaded with protein, fiber, and 5g of sugar
- Hershey’s Natural Unsweetened Cocoa – same taste as the original, but only 10 calories per tablespoon
- Organic Coconut Sugar – pure, unrefined alternative to processed sugars and artificial sweeteners
- Natural & Gluten-free – healthier selections of a not so new trend
- Clif Bar – organic, fruit and nut bars
- GardenLites – Zucchini Chocolate Veggie Muffins
- Flexitarianism – a growing trend among people who prefer not to go all vegan, but limit their intake of meats. Some refer to themselves as “weekday vegetarians.”
- Greek yogurt – thicker and creamier than traditional yogurt, but loaded with more protein: 15g per 6-ounce serving
- Vegetable Desserts – vegetable-based desserts are on the rise, with parsnip cake as the new carrot cake
As 2012 winds down and you start focusing upon your New Year’s resolutions, remember that life is better when you “Eat and Live Healthy!”
