Is Your Child Eating Healthy at School?

When my children were younger, I took extra precautions to make sure they ateHealthy lunch box containing sandwiches, apples, vegetables healthy at school. Being a working parent meant I wasn’t always around to monitor their eating habits.

Since my children had vegetarian diets, I made it a priority to make the school aware of their dietary habits. So, when school started and the little darlings headed to school, they each had notes to give to their teacher.

You may think this is a little unusual, but I wasn’t going to leave it to chance that my children ate properly at school. I also didn’t want my children to have the burden of explaining what they could and couldn’t eat. When my children ate school lunches, sending a note was the perfect solution, . But, the note also made the school accountable in ensuring my children ate according to my instructions.

Monitoring my children’s school lunches was much easier when I prepared the lunches at home. In our household, preparing school lunches became a rite of passage for older siblings.

If you’re looking for ideas to prepare healthy school lunches, here is a list of items that were on my weekly grocery list:

  • Fresh fruit: grapes, apples, bananas, pears, peaches, oranges
  • Dried fruit: raisins, apples
  • Nuts: sunflower seeds
  • Cookies: oatmeal
  • Beverages: boxed apple, orange, grape juice, bottled water
